Audio about disinformation:

Disinformation is the deliberate creation or sharing of false information to mislead people. Usually for the benefit of the person who started spreading it. Disinformation is often shocking, or makes the reader feel an emotion to get them engaged in the story. It creates bias and is made to deceive and frame people.

Disinformation can put a negative light on a community, and I feel like it’s easy to start, but hard to stop. Once a rumor has been circulated enough, people treat it like it’s true despite having no sources. So it can be especially detrimental to smaller communities.

There is a lot of disinformation spread about LGBTQ community for example, one that I saw a lot was people saying that trans people are just pedophiles who want to go after children. Which is obviously not true, but many people still believed it and spread it more.

A way to help stop the spread of disinformation is to check the validity of the information if you’re unsure, then do a quick search on a few different websites and compare the information shown. And/Or simply do not share the information if you’re unsure. It’s simple but it helps stop the spread.
