About Me

Hi there, it’s Liam!

“It takes great deal of courage to see the world in all its tainted glory, and still to love it.” – Oscar Wilde

(It’s a very ubiquitous sentiment, but this quote has always resonated with me because its message has served me as the role of a lifeline during trials and tribulations. It’s encouraging, and it assists in seeing the storm while falling victim to the eye of it.)

My name is Liam Bilsky, and I will be 18 years old as of August 2022. I’m very interested in film, and the chair I’d like to die on is the director’s chair. Movies for me are the closest thing on this planet to the meaning of life, and I know how pompous and silly that sounds, but I stand by that claim in holy matrimony.

If film doesn’t work out, I’d like to just live out a quiet classical life I suppose. Maybe I’ll take up landscaping and gardening, work a modest job in a modest home, and just confide in those around me.

Outcome dependence is a dangerous game to play. Same with art in general, everybody’s eyeing it.

Favorite Color?

Look at my page. Any hints?

Where are you from?

Port Coquitlam, located in British Columbia, Canada. However, I usually say I’m from Vancouver to complicate things less, I consider Vancouver a home either way (it’s only a 40 minute train ride!).

Favorite Food?

Either Phở or pizza. Not particularly healthy but, eh.

Favorite Drink?

The cream soda flavor of Jones Soda.

Hobbies?

Scriptwriting, creating YouTube videos, collecting Blu-rays, that’s about it for now.

Favorite Video?

A favorite video is very hard to decide, due to the encumbering amount of video content, but a video that comes close is “Grinch’s Ultimatum” by PilotRedSun. I don’t quite understand what about it is so addictive and enchanting. The art style is bewildering, the subject matter and story beats are oddly cathartic; such an amusing video all around.

Favorite Website?

https://tvtropes.org/

One of my favorite websites is TV Tropes, it’s a database/index made up of storytelling tropes and clichés. It’s hyper-specific and filled to the brim, which assists highly in finding out if something has already been done before/done to death, in addition to knowing the narrative devices to just avoid all together. I’ve learned a lot from TV Tropes, and originality seems far less daunting when I take notations from it.

Favorite Sport?

I don’t really play sports, but when I do, it’s usually basketball and (street) hockey. I enjoy watching any martial art, as well as basketball, and also bobsledding when the Olympics roll around.

Pet(s)?

I have a cat named Fergus. My primary nickname for him is Rattlesnake Jake (yes, the villain from Rango). We adopted him soon after he was abandoned along with his pact of other kittens in Manitoba, he loves it at home. He’s 9 months old, so he’s a bit of a brat still, but that’s A-OK.

Favorite Movie?

Here are my top 5:

5. Good Time (2017)

4. Oldboy (2003, NOT THE AWFUL SPIKE LEE REMAKE FROM 2013)

3. It’s Such A Beautiful Day (2012)

2. Punch-drunk Love (2003)

1. The Lighthouse (2019)

Movie Director?

Paul Thomas Anderson. I also love Josh and Benny Safdie, Gakuryū Ishii, David Lynch, Coen Brothers, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Scorsese, Tarantino, Wong Kar-Wei, Park Chan-wook, Gaspar Noe, and many more.

Actor and Actress?

Jack Nicholson and Tilda Swinton.

Favorite Music Genre?

Probably ambient, but I love all kinds of metal + classic rock, alternative/experimental/old school hip hop and rap, indie, vaporwave, Eurodance, moog, jazz, psytrance, noise music, I’m ALL OVER the place.

Favorite Musical Artist?

I’m so undecided there. It might be Oneohtrix Point Never, but I also love Death Grips, Rammstein, Tyler The Creator, Type O Negative, David Lynch (his music as well his movies), Aphex Twin, Queen, Colin Stetson, and William Basinski.

Favorite Song?

Also very difficult. Music is too good to choose just a single track, I swear to god I have a favorite track for every week, but some songs that come to mind as nearest to favorite would be:

Lost But Never Alone – Oneohtrix Point Never

Right Here, Right Now – Fatboy Slim

dlp 1.1 – William Basinski

Sonne – Rammstein

Scandal – Queen

Windswept (Reprise) – Johnny Jewel (Twin Peaks: The Return Soundtrack)

I hate writing about myself if I’m being frank with you, but I hope this was a sufficient insight into who I am, I guess.
