Who am I?

Reilley Pfrimmer

Since 2007

I’m Reilley, a grade 9 STEAM student. But you knew that already, you’re on this page.

What is important to you?

I am really into computers and software, and code as a hobby. I like building simple software, games, bots, really anything that comes to mind. Generally, I code to address a problem I have, or to make something more convenient. In the case of games, they don’t really contribute to anything so I generally do them as an exercise or proof of concept of some sort. Below is a rough reproduction of Space Invaders I made with Javascript, so that it could be directly placed into this website. I also built it because I have never really used Javascript for any purpose other than web design, and wanted to test its capabilities in terms of games.

(Controls are: A/D to move, SPACE to shoot.)
(Known issues: Hitboxes are a little finnicky because I wanted to keep performance high. Shooting an enemy bullet will not destroy it. Restarting is impossible, you’d have to reload.)

I also build physical things like circuits and robots from time to time.

I like programming because it’s completely limitless, and can potentially have an actual application in the real world. For example, I built a Discord bot for my friends that can combine emojis. It works by interfacing with Google’s Emoji Keyboard API, or allows them to upload their own.

What or who inspires you?

I think my biggest inspirations are my friends and parents. Knowing that I have a group of genuinely supportive friends and family makes a huge difference in my motivation to work hard and do my best. In the case of my parents, I can directly show them what I do, or even make things specifically for them. For example, here’s a project I made for my mother as a Christmas gift:

I apologize for the poor photo quality, one thing I am most definitely not, is a photographer.

Steam is a program that centers largely around the above topics (Science, technology, engineering, arts, math). A lot of group project work is done, incorporating the SCRUM method.
One of the things that I enjoy the most about the STEAM program is the access to machinery and tools I would otherwise not have access to. I have used the machinery to make personal projects, gifts, school projects, garbage, and probably a few other things.

Why did you choose STEAM?

I was looking for something interesting to do and to possibly extend my learning, and I figured that STEAM looked like a really great way to do that. The open-ended projects mean that I can take it as far as I want to, and also mean I can learn the boundary between “ambitious” and “impossible”, which is a problem I sometimes struggle with. (E.G. Projects that I make huge on small timelines generally don’t work well for me). It also has allowed me to express creativity in ways that I don’t think I’d have the option to elsewhere, like my SSEP diagram project which ended up looking really nice in my opinion. (see below)

I used 3D software to create this animation, and some video editing to software for extra effects. The fact that I was allowed to do this, in my opinion, is a testament to the very open-ended nature of these projects.

How do I access the site directory?

You don’t! The only way you can see more of my blog is by entering the password that I probably will not tell anyone. (You can also open up the site directory with inspect element, it’s not that hard. [I also left the password completely unencrypted just sitting inside a script tag])
