All about me

by: Andrew Ko

Hi, my name is Andrew, I am a grade 9 and am a part of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) program at Terry fox. I am enjoying my time here so far.

These are the 4 pillars of terry fox:

1. Perseverance

Definition: Perseverance is the commitment to continue working towards a goal despite obstacles, challenges, or setbacks. It involves resilience, determination, and the ability to stay focused and motivated even when the going gets tough.

2. Kindness/Compassion

Definition: Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate toward others. Compassion goes a step further, involving empathy and a desire to alleviate the suffering of others. Together, they promote a supportive and caring community where individuals look out for one another.

3. Integrity

Definition: Integrity refers to the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. It involves being consistent in actions, values, and beliefs, and maintaining transparency in interactions with others. People with integrity are trustworthy and take responsibility for their actions.

4. Leadership

Definition: Leadership is the ability to guide, influence, and inspire others towards achieving common goals. It involves taking initiative, demonstrating accountability, and fostering collaboration. Effective leaders empower others and model positive behaviors that contribute to a healthy community.

These pillars collectively promote the development of well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to their communities.

I stand for the pillar of leadership. I find leadership important in a person for them to been seen as a good person. Leaders require a lot of endurance because you need to endure a lot of hate and comments about you and can be difficult if no one listens to you.

Mark Rober is a prime example of modern leadership through his engaging approach to science education. A former NASA engineer, he gained fame on YouTube for his fun videos that make STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) accessible and exciting.

Mark’s creativity shines through initiatives like the “#Team Trees” campaign, which raised over $20 million to plant trees, reflecting his commitment to environmental stewardship and community action.

His honesty about his journey—sharing both successes and failures—makes him relatable and inspires others to embrace curiosity and learning. Mark encourages viewers to experiment and not fear mistakes, showing that innovation often comes from trying new things.

Through his work, Mark Rober exemplifies how leadership can inspire, educate, and promote positive change. By making science enjoyable, he empowers the next generation to think creatively and contribute to a better future.

Why I Chose This Video:

  1. Clarity of Message: Simon Sinek clearly articulates the concept of “Start with Why,” emphasizing that great leaders inspire action by focusing on the underlying purpose rather than just what they do or how they do it.
  2. Engaging Presentation: Sinek’s engaging style and storytelling ability make complex ideas accessible and memorable, showcasing how effective communication is a key aspect of leadership.
  3. Real-World Examples: He provides relatable examples from well-known leaders and organizations, illustrating the principles of leadership in a practical context.
  4. Inspirational Tone: The video encourages viewers to think differently about leadership, prompting self-reflection and motivation to lead with purpose

I chose Valorant as my site because it exemplifies key leadership and teamwork dynamics in a competitive gaming environment. Here are a few reasons why it’s a strong choice:

  1. Team Coordination: Valorant emphasizes the importance of communication and strategy among team members. Effective leaders within the game facilitate collaboration and ensure that everyone is playing to their strengths.
  2. Role Specialization: Each character (or agent) has unique abilities, requiring players to take on specific roles. Leaders must recognize and leverage these strengths to achieve success, showcasing adaptability and resourcefulness.
  3. Decision Making Under Pressure: The fast-paced nature of Valorant requires quick thinking and decisive actions. Leaders often need to make strategic calls that can turn the tide of a match, highlighting the importance of situational awareness.
  4. Community and Culture: Valorant has fostered a vibrant community where players can learn from one another, share strategies, and grow as teammates. This sense of belonging and collective improvement mirrors effective leadership principles.

I use Kindness/Compassion and Integrity everyday

Kindness/Compassion

I make a conscious effort to practice kindness daily. This can be as simple as offering to help a classmate who is struggling with their studies or volunteering at a local community center. Recently, I participated in a food drive, helping to organize and distribute meals to families in need. This experience taught me the impact of small acts of kindness and how they can uplift others.

Integrity

Integrity is vital in my interactions with others. I believe in being honest and transparent, especially when facing challenges. For example, during group projects, I always own up to my mistakes and communicate openly with my teammates. This approach fosters trust and encourages a collaborative environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns.

Conclusion

By focusing on Kindness/Compassion and Integrity, I aim to create a positive impact in my community and build strong, trusting relationships. These pillars guide my actions and help me grow as an individual.
