On October 8 the two steam cohorts went together for a field trip to Belcarra Regional Park (təmtəmíxʷtən). When we got there we did land acknowledgements, it was pretty cold and drizzling a bit of rain. Our group looked a the crab traps first. To the walk there, we saw a bunch of starfishes clung onto the dock, we even got to see a sea lion scouting our crab traps.
(We made a nature journal in class. I used water colour.)
~ Dungeness crabs ~
All the crabs we caught were Dungeness crabs a type that is very common there, we unfortunately couldn’t take home any of them because they were either too small or were feminine (so unlucky). Something I learned about female crabs were that is they have a lot of extra nutrients then they put it into changing their shell colours (the bottom mainly) to a brighter reddish-purple colour to attract the males.
~ Nature walk ~
After a quick lunch break, our group went on a mini nature learn and search for plants. We identified many native same with invasive species of plants. Like the English Ivy, brought for home decor. and garden escapes but the overgrew and now are tree killers. Or the poisonous Snowberries, on the other hand Plantain aka nature’s band-aid.
