During I Week, the steam program (gr.9 & 10) went to Hyde Creek to build cardboard boats and race them. Our group (me, Lynden H. & Sam) all met up at Hyde Creek half awake but kinda excited.
Before starting to cut anything or even drawing things out we made sure we all knew what kind of design we should go for. After that we started to measure, draw and cut pieces of cardboard. Once we got enough pieces, we’d either use it to replicate the other side of the boat or just get two of us to tape while the other continues to cut. Later on, we were all taping, inside and out making sure no gaps were there, then finished with taping up the entire bottom and sides to make our boat waterproof.

.
We wanted to try and get the longest float, so we made sure to make our boat big enough for us three. The boat looked promising and raced well with no leaks. But because of the way we designed our walls, slanting at an angle, the water ended up going inside before all three of us got in. In the end we got 1st longest float in ‘Heat 2’ and 3rd in the overall, getting 24:59 minutes.
To improve our boat design we probably could’ve added a thicker bottom and made the structure of it more sturdy so it would’ve folded in on itself.
Also, props to Sam who stayed in the boat and raced it. I think he was best for it he’s tall so he can reach the water and by him spreading his weight during the float we lasted a long time.
It was super fun to do with my friends!
