Dry By, Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman
Summary Of what we have read up to March 5th (Spoiler Alert)
- For the past month we have been reading a book called Dry. The book is broken up into multiple sections called Parts. In the first section, pg. 1-71, we are introduced to all the characters. We are introduced to our main character named Alissa. At the beginning, after finding out that water was not coming back for a long while they decided to go to the local Costco to get food and most importantly water. They get over there with no drinks left to buy, but no one has taken any of the ice, so they take that instead. Part two their parents leave to find water. After two days and no word of their parents they set out looking for them with her little brother Garret, and her neighbor Kelton.
- In part two they get to a beach after finding car keys hoping to find water in the car. They get jumped by some water zombies for the car keys. Then a new character named Jacque who is a much older woman saves them with a gun. They go to the car just to find that it is full of garbage and no water. After the underwhelming discovery they get into the car and drive back home with Jacque. Once they get home their parents still are not there, so they go to Kirton’s parents for help. Kirton’s dad agrees to let them live in their house until their parents came home. After seeing a poster outside saying that there was going to be a neighborhood meeting about water Alissa decides to go there with water to give to the people. After seeing the water, they decide that they are going to raid Kelton’s house that is stacked with resources like food and water.
- In part three Kelton’s parents are trying to contact their other son. When he does come Kelton’s dad mistakes him for an intruder and shoots him. When the neighborhood notices that they have an opportunity to get in and steal all their water they break in and ran-sack the place. They drive away knocking Kelton unction because he was about to shoot his gun into a crowd. Then they drive away to go to Kelton’s bug out.
How I think the book is going to end
- I think in the end of the book after they have been in the bug out for a couple of days Alysa and Garret decide to go back home to look for their parents. they get back to their neighborhood to fined hat where they used to live is in shambles. houses are destroyed and any sense of humanity seems to be lost. they knock on Kelton’s door to see if their parents are in there just to fined Kelton’s house destroyed and his parents gone. then they go into their old house to see if anyone is there. still they have not seen anyone ever since they entered the town. they saw some families camping on the highway. they go into their house and then they hear a door creak open. as they go closer to the door and peer in they see their parents sitting on the bed. As a rush of relief flushes over Alyssa body she begins to sob and run to her parents Garret does the same. then after they realize that there is nothing left for them at the house they decide to start driving out of California to try and fined somewhere new to live.
What happens in the end (Spoiler Alert)
- At the end of the book dry something very unexpected happens. Alyssa, Garret, Kelton and Jacque all get home safe. the water is now running again and Alyssa is having a shower. Three chapters before they are surrounded by forest fires trying to fight through the smoke to stay alive. Garret is dying and they are using there last bit of water to try and save him. they end up tipping over a cooler full of water when it gets covered in flames. They bought this cooler of water from some people before who have now come to get the water back. Kelton shoots them and they narrowly escape the fire with Garret alive.
Why I Chose This Book
I chose the book dry because it was a very interesting book that we had been reading in class. The very real idea of a drought happening stranding millions of people to die was very interesting. The character development through the story is also very good. Over all i would rate the book 7/10.
