1. Basics of Image Editing
- Pixlr.com is pretty similar to photoshop, so if you are familiar with this program it should be straight forward – if you are not, it’s not that difficult to learn! You should find the time to practice on your own as well
- Here’s what I will show you how to do today:
- First open this folder to access some images.
- Some basic functions: Opening an existing image, creating a new image, what are layers, unlocking an existing image, duplicating layers
- Colour – HSL and Hex values. What are Hex Values? How does HSL work?
- How to Crop and Resize the images
- Balancing color using “adjust”
- Filters? Copy the layer! Add a filter, then use cut.
- Adding Text: Colour, size, background, outline
- Add an element! There are many things you can add to your image to give it that final touch of elegance. Overlays, borders, shapes and stickers.

Objectives:
a. Open the Kitten-and-bubbles photo from the shared folder. Crop the canvas so that the image is vertical rather than horizontal and only has the kitten. Ensure the width is 200 pixels. Save the photo and call it “A”. Copy the photo into your shared folder.
b. Using the same photo, select the adjust tool and change three of the 6 altering options – Color, Light, Details, Scene, Toning and/or Fill . Change it to something you like, save the photo and call it “B”. Copy the photo into your shared folder.
c. Download an image from unsplash.com or pexels.com. Use the add element tool and add a nice border to your selected image. Save it and call it “C”. Copy the photo into your shared folder.
d. Download an image from unsplash.com or pexels.com. Duplicate your image so you have two layers of the original. With the top layer selected, add a filter to it – you need to select a filter and increase or decrease the value. Don’t just mess up the photo. Try to make it look nice – if you don’t want all of the photo to have the filter, use the cutout tool and cut the parts of the top layer that you do not want the filter to be applied to. Save it and call it “D”. Copy the photo into your shared folder.
e. Download an image from unsplash.com or pexels.com. Duplicate your image so you have two layers of the original. With the top layer selected, make it a black and white photo. Then cutout a portion using the cutout tool and play with the colours of part of the picture. Ensure you have part of the photo in black and white, and another part (usually the focus) having colour. Save it and call it “E”. Copy the photo into your shared folder.
2. Create an image with a positive quote. This will be going on your WordPress website.
- Use this example for an idea of what your image might look like.
- Choose a positive quote and then choose an image to go with it. Think about what your quote is about and how the image might reflect it. Pixabay is another great website for stock photos you can use.
- Use Pixlr or Adobe Photoshop to combine the quote and the image – be careful with your text color and font, it should be legible!
- Once done, add it to assignment 7 along with your answers from the last two lessons on MS Teams.
