Hyde Creek Boat Race
January 23, 2025
We started by cutting off cardboard to make the base of our boat. We then made the sides of the boat and we used a lot of duct tape in the process of forming these together.
We then cut out the back side of the boat and then we made a triangular shape for the front, so it helps the boat move faster in the water.
We taped all of it together using duct tape and then made another layer at the base of the boat to help prevent the boat from drowning early on. The final step was to put masking tape at the bottom of the boat to help
We formed all this together and then put masking tape at the bottom of the boat to help keep the cardboard as dry as possible.
At that point, we had finished forming the boat and it was time to do the boat race. We went in the second heat, and at the sixth row. We decided to put 2 people in the boat, even though it would take up a bit more weight, it would also add more power on the paddling. We ended up winning our race but finished in 3rd place as the fastest boat of all 3 heats. We kept on floating for a while with 2 people inside and just as we were about to put a 3rd person in, the boat sunk.
I think the biggest factors of success to our boat was making a 2nd layer under the base of the boat and adding 2 people in the boat, which produced more power to move the boat faster. I think that our decision of adding 2 people in the boat affected our race positively. To improve our boat for next time, I think we should probably put extra layers of the boat in the middle to help it from sinking because our boat sank from the sides as two people were sitting on both sides
Our final product of our boat is the photo on the right (the boat on the right of the photo)
