Interpreting Graphs
-
1. What topic did you choose? Why did you choose it?
I chose “The Performance of U.S. chipmakers so far”. I chose this because I am interested in technology, especially tech companies and computers.
1.a) Copy the direct link the story you picked.

2. Describe the type of visual that was used to get data across.
The people who made this page used a graph to show their data.
3. In a few sentences what does the visualization tell us? Don’t copy the description given. You can paraphrase and add what you see.
This visualization tells me that Nvidia is doing the best right now, while one of the most famous companies, Intel, is doing absolutely terrible.
4. What type of information is given in the visualization? Be descriptive.
They use normal text (like this page), they use graphs (as shown above), and they use tables. They also use other types like percentages and something called a “P/E ratio” that I don’t know about.
5. Did the visualization catch your eye? Why or why not?
The visualization DID catch my eye because if you go into the page at normal size, the graph I showed in this page is gigantic.
6. After looking at the visualization do you feel comfortable extracting data from it? Why or why not?
I feel comfortable extracting data from the page and the graphs and tables because as I mentioned, the graph is gigantic and easy to read, and they explain how the best and worst companies are doing.
7. What is the most outstanding part of the data visualization?
I think the most outstanding/interesting part is how they found out the info. It says that they tracked all the companies’ stock for a year, and that is a lot of companies to look at.
8. Describe where you think people would be able to use this info/data. Give an example where this data may be relevant and be used.
I think that people who are building computers, and looking for a computer chip (or a CPU) would look for this kind of stuff. For example, after looking at the graph, the people would most likely not buy Intel for its performance.
