My Sample Numeracy Test Experience
“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”
— Albert Einstein
Intro
The Grade 10 Numeracy test is coming! And there’s no way around it because it’s *mandatory* for graduation!
What is it exactly? Well, the Grade 10 Numeracy test is a provincial test that assesses student proficiency in numeracy and is taken in Grade 10.
This test focuses on the application of math learned across many subjects from kindergarten to Grade 10, and requires solving problems using the five numeracy processes
- Interpret
- Apply
- Solve
- Analyze
- Communicate
But as of right now, I am still in Grade 9. So in advance, we were given the task to do the Sample Grade 10 Numeracy Test to know what it’s like.
Note: For this activity, I was instructed to use Form A.
The Experience
When I got into the assessment, I was greeted with a page of rules regarding the test.
Rules:
- It has 26 questions
- The time given to finish this is 2 hours
- Some questions are answered on a response sheet with your name on it. Only the response sheets will be marked, other sheets don’t count.
- Going out of the assessment screen to go on the internet (e.g., online dictionaries, translators, generative AI platforms) will lead to a disqualification.
- Calculators are allowed, and there is a calculator in the online assessment.
Next was a page that taught me how to navigate through the assessment, which is shown below:
Part A
Common Section
The common section of Part A is comprised of 2 given tasks with 6 questions each to answer. The questions are on computer, and responses are completed on computer.
Plan and Design: Maple Syrup
In this task, I was required to do types of questions such as true and false, multiple choice, and fill in the blanks questions regarding the cost of equipment and operating, expenses, profit, and the amount of sap and maple syrup.
Reasoned Estimates: Solar Energy Project
For this task, I was required to answer multiple choice and matching questions that deals mainly with the usage and production of electricity over a period of time.
Student Choice Section
This is one of the 2 Student Choice Section areas in the assessment, and it gives you a choice on which topic you would want to continue with for your written response question (The one you have to answer on the response sheet).
For myself, I chose to continue with the topic of Maple Syrup because I enjoyed doing the Maple Syrup questions more.
This was fairly easy to finish off with a bit of time, and here is my solution:
Profit = Income – Land Least Cost – Operational Cost
Land Lease Cost:
A) 2ha x $5,000/ha = $10,000
B) 8ha x $5,000/ha = $40,000
C) 16ha x $5,000/ha = $80,000
Operational Cost:
A) 2000 trees x $3.40/tap = $6,800
B) 4000 trees x $2.88/tap = $11,520
C) 6000 trees x $2.68/tap = $16,080
Income:
A) 2000 tree x 57L/tree ÷ 40L/syrup x $15/syrup = $42,750
B) 4000 tree x 57L/tree ÷ 40L/syrup x $15/syrup = $85,500
C) 6000 tree x 57L/tree ÷ 40L/syrup x $15/syrup = $128,350
Profit:
Profit = Income – Land Least Cost – Operational Cost
A)$42,750 – $10,000 – $6,800 = $23,950
B) $85,500 – $40,000 – $11,320 = $33,980
C) $128,250 – $80,000 – $16,080 = $32,170
Brennan should choose Area B, because it generates the most profit.
Part B
Common Section
The common section of Part B is comprised 2 given tasks with 6 questions each to answer. The questions are on computer, and responses are completed on computer.
Model: Ice Cream Shop
On this task, I was required to answer in multiple choice and fill in the blanks questions mainly about using statistics to predict ice cream sales and to calculate the profit.
Share: Dairy Farm
This task focused on matching, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and a data display question about calculating the costs of the farm. These costs include:
- Feed Costs
- Acreage Costs
- Quota Costs
- Maintenance of Machinery Costs
- Cow Costs
Student Choice Section
This is the second Student Choice Section areas in the assessment, and it gives you a choice on which topic you would want to continue with for your written response question.
For myself, I chose to stay with the Ice Cream Shop topic. As for my work, I drew a graph on a separate piece of paper so I can’t show it here.
Reflection
Reflect on your preparation for this assessment.
I prepared a little by reviewing student samples online, keeping up with schoolwork, and asked for help when needed.
Reflect on your work on this assessment. Think about what you did well.
I tried my best to reach each question carefully, worked on responses out on paper first, and I thought carefully about my choice in the student-choice component.
Order the four tasks from most interesting to least interesting.
Maple Syrup, Ice Cream Shop, Dairy Farm, Solar Energy Project
Now that you have gone through the Numeracy exam, what did you gain from the exposure?
After going through the Numeracy exam, I learned that I lacked some unlearned skills to properly finish the exam with a satisfactory score.
What steps will you take to improve your preparation?
Steps I will take to improve my preparation ahead will be studying and gaining a good sense of understanding of the material.
What strategies will you use to achieve a higher score?
Extras
Here is an excel spreadsheet I was require to complete for this DL page.
