STEAM passion project year 2: Final project

My passion project this year was an extension of my CLE project which was a model of a road.

Process:

I began my project by designing it in Fusion 360 after a beginning rough sketch. I made sure to put holes and openings into different areas of the road to mimic catch basins and pipes. The road I prototyped was divided into three layers, a base layer to connect it to the box like shape, a second layer, and a third layer to show the road shape and depth. I had to reprint seperate parts multiple times as they weren’t accurate to an actual engineer design.

This was the model that was initially created in fusion.

Poster-board:

I drew a road map of the pipes underneath a road and how they would be placed in an actual engineering map. Along the side of the map are real on-site pictures of the actual piping and road design, such as fire hydrants and catch basins.

Final Project Reveal: (yes… I know its sideways.. but the website WOULDN’T let me flip it.. so here it is….SIDEWAYS…)

Above is what the final project looked like after I printed it out with the laserbox in class. I designed all the little houses, trees, pipes, and lights with straws and creative placement.

Future plans: I will not be continuing this project for a multitude of reasons, but the main one was this project was not really interesting to me.

STEAM Passion Project Year 2: Check in 1

Check in 1 for grade 10! I’m not exactly sure how to feel about this, but I am excited to start a new project! My project is going to be based on my CLE project that I started in Drafting/CLE. My CLE project was a road design made in Lego and a prototype on a sewage canal. I will be expanding it by turning it into a a working model of a road so that the sewage will actually work and will add a presentation to better present my project. For the next bit until my next check in I will be working on drafting a draft and procuring usable items (eg. straws, containers, etc) to begin working with. I hope that this project turns out just as good as last year!

STEAN Passion Project: Check in 5

Check in 5!! The last one of the year! The STEAM project was held on Wednesday, and it was honestly really fun and cool to see all the different projects and talk to multiple people about my project! If I had the chance to change something that I did for the fair, I think that I would try harder to research a little more on the the information on my project to be able to better explain my project. Although that is what I would have done I am still proud of how I was able to keep the people’s attention as I was speaking and give adequate information. The event was a little different from what I was expecting. I was expecting a HUMONGOUS event from the way that the teachers talked about it, with HOARDS of people entering and exiting, there was a lot of people there just wasn’t as many people as I was expecting. For this project I don’t think that I will be continuing it next year, because it can’t really be continued without making it feel overly long and I don’t think that I will be mentally able to continue it. The planning part of this project was very straightforward and easy to follow, except the ending product was different from what I expected, though that was probably due to the fact that I didn’t add some parts and changed some of the designs last minute. The plan that I had designed DID help me, it gave me a starting point for where I would put the separate buildings and organs. I feel that for the presentation part of the event, I think that I did really well and am pretty proud of what I have accomplished. Although at the beginning I felt overwhelmed and nervous, as the day went on it got easier and by the evening part, all my words were coming out smoothly and it was an enjoyable experience. My project seemed to gather a lot of attention for its less than ordinary or common look, for the whole event I noticed that a lot of people came to see what my project was about and that made me feel really happy and accomplished.

STEAM Passion Project: Check in 4

Check in 4!! The year is almost done and my project is also almost done. So far i have completed drawing all the body parts that I will require. For this week I am going to utilize my time into drawing the final drawings that will be the cityscape. what I currently need to do is draw the city hall, sewage/power plant, and the normal high rise buildings that you will find in every city. For the end of the year presenting part, I think that I will just have my presentation and explain what this is and maybe why I did it. I might also have my laptop out so that passerby’s can see these posts that I have been doing every week (not that they should! these are… horrible!). Some things that I feel that I am having trouble with is that actually sketching out what it is that I want to do is a lot harder than I thought. What I have finished currently is drawings of the liver, pancreas(?), kidneys, gallbladder, stomach, as well as the tree that will serve as my heart representation. As my friend has said, this projects is basically making a metaphorical representation of the body! From left to right is as follows, the heart tree, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, and liver.

STEAM Passion project: Check in 3

Soo, check in 3….. and still barely any progress… For this week I started on drawing the heart, brain and small/large intestines. My goals for this week are to finish the sketches of the other important body parts that I will need.

As I have stated in my previous post(s) the body parts will represent a certain amenity that we have in out cities. The intestines (which you can see on the left) will represent a sewage system because the intestines in our bodies work to filter the waste that we create from the food that we eat. The brain (the middle one)  and it will represent a government facility as the brain controls all of our body movement. The heart, our life organ (the one on the left) will be represented as a tree, because trees give us oxygen.

STEAM Passion Project: Check in 2

As I have (probably) mentioned in my last post, I’m not a open write-down-everything type of person, and is really really bad at this, but here I am so… I guess we’ll begin?

For this check in we discussed my project and what I could do to improve on what I have done. I currently have finished a draft on the layout of my city as well as an prototype on how I will accomplish my 3D design idea. The idea consists of a piece of paper folded to a 90 degree angel and will be held in place my some sort of wooden stick. The stick will serve as a sort of hinge that will help move the paper up and down. This prototype will be used for the more prominent buildings that will be created. For the rest of the city scape I will stick two pieces of folded paper together (again at the 90 degree angle). The paper for both of these designs will be the base structure and I will later on add a drawing of the building (so if it was an apartment building I would draw one on blank paper and than stick it onto the folded base paper). After that the base paper will be stuck on to the base.

Some things that I still have to improve/complete is probably starting the project itself (what I just explained was speculation and guesswork). Another aspect that I could attempt is on connecting with a someone in the community, perhaps a doctor or someone who knows about the human anatomy. I still need to get fairy lights to completely have all the materials that I need.

STEAM passion project: Check in 1

Do you ever get the feeling in which you feel so overwhelmed with whatever is going on that the world seems to spin all around you? If so, than you can probably guess how i am feeling as I have just started recently on a large project. I’ll tell you right now, I’m not good at writing stuff down on blogs or stuff, and in all honesty, I don’t know what I’m doing… But since I’m supposed to tell you about my project and ideas, I guess I will start (and end my useless babbling).

My project idea is based on the human body and linking it with the idea of a city. A city is built up of its people and the community built within, but in this city, the people consist of cells. Normal cells build up the bodies flesh and muscle everything else. This city area will feature the metropolitan area of heavy traffic and general crowdedness. Most of the civilian complexes will be apartments. The more prominent buildings will be a extra large tree, city hall, sewage and power plant, and a school. Since every city has issues such as thieves or criminals, this city will have the same perpetrators in the shape of an infection. the police in these cases will be white blood cells.

Some things that I will need to work on from the input I received from my first checkin would probably be to have a firmer idea of what I am going to try to accomplish. I don’t have a draft for my project or a prototype yet so I will probably work towards accomplishing those ideals. I probably should also work towards connecting with community members for ideas. Some ideas that I came up with during with the check in was possibly contacting my family doctor. Currently my resource for information has been Google and my mom, both of which have been very helpful.
