3D Heart Model Kira. H

About my project: This is a heart model that explains the motion of the blood moving through the heart. I built the model so you can see the blood movement, interior, and exterior. This model is made of Styrofoam I cut and shaped into a human heart. I used tubes and syringes to make blood movement. I drew a diagram of the heart to explain my project so you can follow along and understand the different parts of the heart.

Idea: A heart model That explained the motion of which the blood moves through the body and heart. The heart will be a model made of two Styrofoam boards in the shape of a human heart. The two pieces will be the same size stacked on top on each other, the idea is to see the out side of the heart, and to be able to open the heart to see the heart inside and the blood pumping from the inside. I would use tubes and syringes to move the colored liquid (blood), and the tubes are acting as the artery and blood vessels.

Why I choose this:

  • I have a passion for biology
  • I want to go into pre-med
  • I want to be a Cardiothoracic Surgeon
  • I made CLE PowerPoint on Cardiothoracic Surgeons and wanted to extend on that
  • Last year I made a “First aid Fanny pack” and wanted to relate this project more to biology and organs

Moving forward: I would like to expand on the project. In grade 11 I want to focus on the respiratory system making a model of the lungs, nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi. The idea would be to make a model of the system and make the lungs move, creating the motion of respiration.

Materials: Styrofoam, Plastic tubes, Syringes, Hot glue, Paint, and Ribbon.

Check-In 1 (Mar 5, 2024):

My teacher advisor and I had our first meeting. I explained my idea to my teacher. I knew I wanted to do a heart model of some sort, I just didn’t know how I wanted to present/ make it. I had many ideas on how I wanted to pursue this STEAM project. For example, clay models, 2D model on cardboard, and other Styrofoam models.. My teacher help me narrow down my ideas for my model until I decided on this one. My teacher explained that there is a science teacher that has many human anatomy models, including a heart model. This teacher also does grade 12 dissections on pig or cow hearts in the spring. I got invited to dissect the hearts with his class. My teacher is providing me with syringes and tubes for my model. At the end of our meeting we talked about what I should be doing before our next meeting in April. I explained that I will research, plan, update website, and get materials/ start building. I will be making check list and use my STEAM project worksheets so I can stay on track and complete my model before May 21st.

Check-In 2 (April 17, 2024):

My teacher and I discussed my progress and what I am currently working on. We discussed my website and my model. I told her I was still working on my poster and my website, and was going to work on my model next. My teacher was able to find syringes from the school that I can use for my model. At this point I still need to find tubing for my project. My teacher said I was on track and should look into finding tubing on amazon. I currently need to start working on my model and get ready for check-in 3, and I will be using the forms that were given to stay on track.

Check-In 3 (May 21, 2024):

My teacher and I had a quick meeting during flex to make sure I was on track for the STEAM Fair. I have completed my model shape and still need to paint. I am also still working on both the poster and website. I am thinking of adding a QR code for others to scan during the fair so they can see my progress and other information. I have made several different diagram which I will use on my poster. Once I am done making my model I will take a picture and send to my teach so she can print the picture in color. On my poster I will have pictures, diagrams, QR code, Information, and other details. I am currently still working on completing this project, but will be ready for the STEAM Fair on June 5th.

Summary (June 3, 2024):

I have finished my project and everything is complete. I have made my model and I am very proud of it. I have painted the model  different colours to show different chambers and valves in the heart. Red shows high oxygen because it is receiving the oxygen from the lungs. Blue shows low oxygen because when it distributes oxygen to your body it has less showing you what each colour means. I died each water color blue and red, this helps you identify which side of the valve is pumping blood.

I spent a lot of time working on my poster and model. I feel I have improved on my skills to make clear and presentable poster and also making visually appealing creations with creative ideas. I was more organized and stayed on track. I used both of the Passion Project booklets to stay on track.

I learnt a lot from this experience, both years in STEAM have been very fun. I have learnt a lot from this program and Fair. The STEAM Fair is something that I look forward to every year because I get to come up with creative ideas for a project I get to share with the community. This year I hope I get to show others what I have made, and also to educate them on something I have researched for many months.

STEAM Fair (June 5, 2024):

The STEAM Fair was very fun this year. I got to show students, teachers, parents, friends, and relatives my work and project. Lots were amused and thought that it was a great project and idea. I had lots of people ask about my project and I got to explain how it works, what it is, and why I did it. My poster and my project were visually appealing and looked neat and organized during the fair. I got lots of positive feedback from my community and I was able to display my project, diagrams, and website QR code. I feel that this was a good experience, and I got to k=learn lots from this experience
