My logo for the kindness/compation pillar.
The digital pillar I’m promoting is Kindness/Compassion. This pillar is important because with social media today it is easy to be mean online without facing repercussions. When you spread kindness and compassion it helps combat some of the negativity that people experience today. Nowadays bullying is a lot less in person and definitely more online. And with COVID happening, a lot more people find themselves online than they did before. With less social interaction, people are forgetting that people online are real people and not just pixels on a screen.
I don’t follow any people whose sole purpose is to speak kindness and compassion. However, most of the people I follow do try to create spaces that are safe and inclusive. Curtis Conner is a commentary YouTuber who mainly makes commentary videos about bad movies, cringey YouTube videos or bad people on the internet. He usually relies on comedic jokes to make his videos enjoyable and he has done his part to make his space a fun and accepting place. So though he doesn’t actively write about “being kind”, the people who follow him know it is a safe place and they will be accepted.
If I were to be a person with an online reputation it would not be good for me to have negative posts, hate speech or things that would be classified as bullying. For example, if people who followed me saw negative things that I posted, they might promote negative things themselves, which spreads more hate. We see this in online communities that support certain politics that can lead to more discrimination for marginalized groups, and harmful stereotypes.
If I were creating an online channel, I would do what I can to make an inclusive space so that no one has to deal with triggering content. And if I were to post content I feel might trigger some people, I would add a warning. I would want to design a space that makes people feel safe and not in danger. I would promote inclusivity and safety and belonging for my followers, and for those who view my page.
