Hyde Creek Boat Races

The Hyde Creek Boat Races occurred over a few weeks before and during “I Week”. The goal of this race was to design and craft a boat made of cardboard. This boat would be put through two challenges. The first challenge was how fast could it float across the pool with a passenger inside of it. The second was how much weight (In people) could the boat handle. To be eliminated the boat must be sunken under the water during either challenge. There were also separate fun trophies like the best sinking act. We were given a few weeks to prepare a design but only an hour to turn the cardboard into the boat. We were given the cardboard and duct tape to use in this hour. The project was in groups of four, but during “I Week” I would be away in a cabin. This meant I would not be there on the day of the building. The solution to this problem was to join a full group and help design the boat without participating in the building phase.

My group consisted of Ibrahim, Dylan A., Rashaan, and Nathan. During our design, we decided we wanted a box with a triangle at the end like normal boats. We also chose to fold certain parts rather than cutting and taping most things to prevent more leakages. With this idea, my group created a boat that won first place in their group with Dylan in the passenger seat. Unfortunately, they sank during the weight test when Nathan was added.
