STEAM 9

This is how all started:

STEAMBOATRACE

Race Day
We all gathered in the morning of January 23 2024 at Hyde Creek for a fun project:

to build cardboard and tape boats .

My team members were Daniel,.. … … ..

We started out the project by assessing the materials given and our plans.

Average time for building a cardboard and duct tape boat was about 3 hours, but our boat took about 2 hours, 2 rolls of duct tape (regular duct tape).Regular duct tape is enough to stop water from entering the boat.

We used 1 box cardboard . When starting off, we accounted for how many people will be riding in the boat as the layers of cardboard needed  to be accounted for. Next we measured out the dimensions, and made sure that there is enough leg room, length, width, and heigh. We picked the smallest and lighter of us to be the captain of the boat and sail it for us.

After you have the boat assembled we add the duct tape-waterproofed the boat.

Once we have finished taping it together, we made sure to go over it again to make sure that there are no holes or air bubbles where water can get in.

How to Find the Density:

The density of water is 1 g/m3 or 1000 kg / m3, so anything below it will float.

-Boat weight: 25lbs

-Mass of rider: 110lbs ( 50kg)

-Total mass: 136lbs

-Total volume of boat: 0.4m3

Density = Mass / Volume

136lbs to kg = 61kg

Density = 61kg / 0.4 m3

=152.5

divide by 1000

= 0.15 as the density.

Since it is below 1, the boat will be able to float carrying a mass of up to 110 lbs.

Describe the process you went through to create your boat (include text & pictures)
-measure

-make sure there is not any leaks. If needed, use a little tape to make them stronger

-flatten the bottom of the hulls

-try making the rim the same height going all around the edge of the hull.
-balance test before the main test
.

  • What factors contributed to the success (or failure) of your race?
  • position of the rider
  • how well was taped

What could you improve about your boat design?
-calculate the density properly
How did the mass of the paddler affect your race? we chose the lighter of us since the cardboard boat cannot hold a heavy rider
