Using data visuals to tell the story
- What topic did you choose? why did you choose it?
I chose South Korea’s largest 25 companies because since I’m from South Korea, I thought it will be nice to learn new things about Korean companies.
1a. copy the direct link to the story you picked
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/ranked-south-koreas-largest-companies-by-market-capitalization/
2. Describe the type of visual that was used to get data across
The visual data is divided into 7 sections and tells us about the data of each category’s market capitalization. Company with the bigger squares has more money.
3. In a few sentences what does the visualization tell us?
This visualization tells us that by the looking at the squares you can tell that the bigger the square it is, the bigger market capitalization it is.
4. What type of information is given in the visualization? Be descriptive.
The information in this visualization tells us about the amount of money they make and the market capitalization of each companies. For example, in technology, SK hyunix made $72B and NAVER made $23B. If you look in the visual graph, SK hyunix obviously has bigger square, and NAVER has smaller square compared to SK hyunix.
5. Did the visualization catch your eye? Why or Why not?
The visualizations caught my eyes because the big squares and the different colours were standing out a lot.
6. After looking at the visualization do you feel comfortable extracting data from it. Why or why not?
Yes, I do feel comfortable extracting the data from it because in the squares there is the amount of money the company has made and the company’s name.
7. What is the most outstanding part of the data visualization?
The most outstanding part of this data visualization is that they divided the company’s in 7 categories, and they each have different colours for the different categories.
8. Describe where you think people would be able to use this information/data. Give an example where this data may be relevant and can be used.
People could use this infromation/data when they are looking for a job or see how much the company makes money. For example, when you are looking for a job, and you want to go to a company that makes at least $15B, they can go to Kakao, Coupang Samsung etc…
