SSEP PROJECT SUMMARY

The experiment will be testing the rate of how fast food decomposes in space. The tube will consist of three different sections with three different foods. A piece of apple and orange, a piece of whole grain bread, and a piece of ground beef (raw). The experiment will test if it is even possible to use the parts of the decomposed food as fertilizer for growing food in space. The experiment will include 3 compartments inside of the tube. Compartment one will consist of pieces of apple and orange. Compartment 2 will consist of a few pieces of whole grain and white bread. The final compartment will have some raw meat. Decomposition is the state and process of rotting. I think that the food will decompose slower because the elements of earth are not acting upon the food. However, bacteria and oxygen will make the food decompose. There are no steps that need to happen. We will keep the same foods in the same tube here on earth and our group will compare the rate of decomposition on the two tubes. The experiment will be measured by the mass of the food. When food decomposes it lets of CO2 and will lose mass. The lighter the food, how we will know what one decomposed faster.
