The Life Skills Program, or Skills Squad, is intended to provide students with Low Incidence designations an opportunity to discover and develop appropriate life skills, and to provide a supportive environment in which they can apply those skills. At Terry Fox Secondary, we strive for our students to have functional numeracy and literacy skills to gain employment, be self-sufficient, and engage in self-advocacy. In addition to completing school and program goals, students also engage in district work experience training and placements.

Students will develop the following skills:

Academic Skills Personal Skills
  • Problem solving
  • Communicating
  • Synthesizing
  • Self-Advocacy
  • Self-Regulation
  • Social-Emotional Wellness

At the heart of this programming is the needs of the students; we work with parents, teachers, outside agencies and our students to create individual programs that meet their needs for the future.  We create goals that are specific skills or specific needs, that can be worked on in all classroom environments.

Skills Squad students will be enrolled in at least one skill development block a semester, as well as 6 other Terry Fox courses.

Our Skills Squad teachers/case managers are Ms. Rosie Dhesi, Mrs. Trista Jones and Mr. Michael Wadham. They will be consulting with your students’ middle school case managers to ensure a smooth transition to Terry Fox. If you have any questions about the Skills Squad program, or your child’s transition to this program, please do not hesitate to contact Department Head – Trista Jones tjones@sd43.bc.ca
