ENGLISH COURSES
In the English Language Arts curriculum, the six language arts elements (reading, listening, viewing, writing, speaking, and representing) are intimately connected. In English courses, you will examine human communication and stories, including First Peoples and other Canadian texts, as well as multicultural texts in a variety of formats, such as short fiction, essays, poetry, oral stories, and new media. You will refine your own communication skills, learn to think critically and creatively, and enhance your social skills to thrive as an individual and as an engaged member of society.
English 9 STEAM

This course will provide students with a wide range of experiences that have a central focus on reading, writing, and speaking. As part of the STEAM program, the English 9 activities & assignments will often connect with content from Math 9, Science 9 and ADST 9. Students will continue to develop skills including comprehension, communication, critical and creative thinking, and social skills that will allow them to explore a variety of texts while helping them understand the world around them. They will also be expected to add some of their work to their digital portfolio.

English 9 Honours is a class that will allow you to dig deeper into ideas, literature, and the writing process. You will learn and practice the skills of analyzing, considering ambiguities and exploring complex ideas. Critical and creative thinking will be at the forefront of the course as well as thoughtful discussion, language skills and learning a variety of writing techniques. The skills gained in this course will effectively teach you how to think critically about the literature that you read and as a result about the world you live in.

In English 10, you will build understandings about identity and engage in critical and creative thinking about texts, worldviews, and perspectives. You will be invited to make meaningful connections between self, text, and the changing world and to exchange ideas and viewpoints to build shared understanding and extend your thinking. You will learn how to use an increasing repertoire of Canadian conventions, literary devices, reading strategies, and writing processes to further develop your overall literacy skills.

(Foundation: English 9H or recommendation from teacher) English 10 Honours will build off the English 9 Honours course. You will continue to enhance your writing, reading, and speaking skills by exploring a variety of fiction and nonfiction reading selections. This course will provide you a deeper appreciation for literature through applying skills that increase comprehension and promote a deeper understanding of literary techniques.
Composition 11

(Foundation: English 10 or English 10H) Composition 11 is designed to support you as you continue to develop, enhance, and refine your written communication skills. You will read and study compositions in a wide variety of modes and styles. You will also engage in the writing processes of drafting, reflecting, and revising to compose a range of writing, speaking and representation pieces. Furthermore, you will develop confidence in your abilities.
Students who select this course must enroll in BC First Peoples 12 to fulfill the Indigenous-Focused Graduation Requirement.
Creative Writing 11

Creative Writing 11 is designed for students who are interested in developing confidence and refining their writing skills through self-expression for various creative purposes. The course provides students with in-depth opportunities to explore personal and cultural identities, memories, and stories in a wide range of genres. Within a supportive community, students will collaborate and strengthen their skills through writing and design processes. Creative Writing 11 is grounded in the exploration and application of writing processes, inviting students to express themselves creatively as they reflect on, adjust, and extend their writing skills.

(Elective Course: Open to Grades 11 – 12) Creative Writing 12 is an elective course that is designed to help you explore your unique voices through a variety of genres and contexts such as screenplays, podcasts, novels, and games. You will build on your ability to explore your personal and cultural identity, memories, and stories through the lens of genre fiction. Within a supportive and engaging workshop format, you will collaborate to develop your skills by means of oral storytelling, writing processes, and design processes. This course is grounded in the exploration and application of writing as process and invites you to further express themselves creatively as you continue to reflect on, adjust, and extend your writing skills.
English First Peoples 11
Course Code: EFP-11
(Foundation: English 10 or English 10H) English First Peoples 11 provides you the opportunity to actively engage with Reconciliation through the curriculum and invites you to deepen your Indigenous knowledge in a variety of contexts, genres, and media. You will explore the values, beliefs, lived realities, and worldviews of First Peoples in British Columbia and abroad. EFP 11 is an interactive and engaging course that emphasizes writing, oral storytelling, and speaking.

English 12 asks you to extend the communication, thinking, and social skills you built in previous English courses. Through interacting with your classmates and a variety of different texts, you will refine your ability to communicate effectively and to think critically and creatively. You will explore and create original texts about identity, diverse perspectives, and our changing world. You will also contribute to Reconciliation by building greater understanding of the knowledge and perspectives of First Peoples.
