Passion Project

Ski Goggle Case

In our CLE class we started a passion project assignment where we were allowed to make what we wanted. I thought about what I could make that was related to skiing since it is something that I am passionate about. One idea that I thought of was to make a case for my ski goggles and that is what I ended up doing. The ski goggle case will provide a bit more safety towards keeping my goggles in good condition and not letting it get scratched. I will definitely be using it on my many trips up to the mountain.

Objective

The goal for this project is to first build a box out of wood. The top panel of the box will have a hinge attached to it so the box can open and close. I will add magnets to the top edge of the side panel and to the bottom side of the top panel so that when the box closes the magnets meet and click the box closed. I will also make an indent on the top side of the top panel where I will put the brand sticker. I will also shave the edges and cut the corners and then sand it out to make soft edges. Once the box is finished, I will line the outside with a fabric and the inside will be lined with some sort of soft, foam material. I might also make some measurements for my ski goggles and cut a little indent in the foam so that the goggles can snuggly fit inside the box. For the final touch I will make a sticker using the sticker cutter that showcases the brand of my ski goggles, I will stick it on the top of the top panel where I had made an indent.

The finished product of the box ended up looking like this. The logo on the box was laser engraved and it’s supposed to match the brand of my ski goggles. The box can hold both my goggle and my replacement lens.

If you read both my “Objective” and “Final Result” paragraphs you can see what changes I made throughout the course of building it.

Final Result

First, I collected materials, I bought some wood and some hinges. My Dad and I measured to see what size would fit for the ski goggles and then he cut the wood and then I started building the box. The pieces of wood were nailed together, and the lid was attached with hinges. Instead of using magnets to close the box, I used some latches to keep it closed. I also sanded the box including the edges and corners and I rounded the edges and corners. Instead of covering the box in a material, I oil stained the wood. I did make a sticker that showcases my ski goggle brand but instead of putting that on the box, I laser engraved my ski goggle logo on the lid. For the inside of my box, my Mom found a pair of pants that were no longer used and they were a perfect soft and blankety material. I cut up the material and then my Mom helped me glue the material and line the inside of the box.
