Nature Journaling at təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park

Here is my nature journal page:

What we did at Belcarra:

When we got to Belcarra we were all a little worried about getting rained on, as it was pouring during the bus ride, but when we got there it was only drizzling a little bit.  The first thing we did when we got there was split into two groups.  I was in group two so we went on a nature walk first, and then crabbing second.  Unfortunately for our nature walk the trails were closed, but we still got to explore a little bit and learned some things too!  After that we went crabbing.  We had two crab traps, the maximum allowed by one person.  When we pulled up the traps, some seals came by and took some of the crabs and bait out of the traps!  We pulled up so many crabs that it took quite a while to throw them all back in.  I threw a crab back in too.  Unfortunately none of the crabs were big enough to take back to the school, so we had to leave them all behind.  After that we walked back to the bus and went back to the school.

Happy Seal

The biggest crab we caught.  It’s in a pretty standard bucket.

What my watercolour nature journal represents:

  • My watercolour journal is used to represent my observations from the trip, the Dungeness crab, and my thoughts about what I have learned about the crab.
  • The colours I chose to use reflect my experiences.  The colour green on my journal is used to reflect the natural setting that was rich with green vegetation.  I used the blue to represent the water at Belcarra where the crabs and seal live.

Other interesting facts about my work:

  • I spent a long time experimenting with my watercolour pencil crayons in order to get the colours right and to learn how to use them.
  • It took me a while to get the crab drawing accurate to the size of a small Dungeness crab.
  • I did a close up of the claw to try and capture more detail.
  • I used boxes and lines to organize the sections of my nature journal.
