Canadians throw away 3 million tonnes of plastic and of which only 9% is recycled. Everything else goes mainly to bodies of water and recreational, public areas. In fact, litter is responsible for 60% of water pollution. Litter can pollute the air in addition to contaminating the water and the soil. More than 40% of the world’s trash, according to researchers, is burned outside, which can produce polluting gases.

Earth Day is the day when we can appreciate our planet and give back. People plant trees and pick up garbage. Sometimes people get creative and start to run while picking up garbage. This is called plogging which is a variation of plalking. To read more about plalking, click: here. During Earth Day, only a small percentage of 3 million tonnes get picked up. Although it is something, if everyone picked up at least 5 pieces of trash per day, it would help in the long run.

Reducing waste is so important to our planet these days because there is so much garbage around the world. We, as a whole, generate 2.01 billion tonnes per year. That amount needs to go down, but how? check out my waste reduction page
