Plalking

Posted in Capstone Passion Project

Plalking is picking up garbage while going on a walk. Plalking comes from the Swedish word “plocka upp” (pick up) mixed with “walking”. In Sweden, a man named Erik Ahlström started plogging, and soon later he made a website to encourage others to join in and do the same. It first started as an organized activity in Sweden in 2016 and in 2018, other countries started to adopt this event.

How is plalking different from just picking up litter?

Well, there are different variations of plalking such as plogging (jogging while picking up trash) and pliking (biking while picking up trash). These are different from just regular cleaning up the earth. You burn more calories, and fat and overall get more exercise. You get in lunge and squat motions which improves strength in your lower body.

The top most difficult things to recycle are:

  • Cds + DVDs
  • Bubble wrap
  • Citrus Fruit netting
  • Pill Packets
  • Broken Plates
  • Dental hygiene products
  • Razor blades
  • Cat litter
  • Cling film
  • Silica gel

These things are hard to recycle because it is hard to break down, instead, you can reuse these products, even for other uses. Some of these things on the list can be washed or smashed and be used in arts and crafts (CDs + DVDs, broken plates, and pill packets). As for cat litter, you can use it as compost for flower gardens only. Something you can use for its purpose is reusing bubble wrap to store things in.
