Solar Max trip

IMG_5027

for this trip/project, me and many other STEAM kids flew out to Texas to witness the solar eclipse in totality.

the purpose of this trip was to study the animals at the Dallas zoo and keep track of their behavior. My animals were the two 14 year old striped hyenas, one male (felix) and one female (farah). They are brother and sister. The two hyenas before the eclipse displayed very positive behavior, they slept together and ate their food together. no vocalizing towards each other and mostly civil behavior.

since hyenas are dusk and dawn hunters, we were excited the see how they reacted to totality. The two slept in a small ditch in their enclosure, occasionally perking up or stretching. During the start up to totality, they remained asleep. The time during totality and the time it remained dark, the hyenas slept soundly. Once the sun came out and lit up the enclosure, Felix perked his head up, but buried it right back into Farah’s chest. They continued to sleep until the eclipse had fully ended.

Though they were not the most interesting, i still believe that all information is important information. Aside from the eclipse, the whole trip was incredibly memorable, it was an honor to work along side Mr. Csuka and Mr. Hartstone-rose.
