“Who is Karin Khuong? Karin Khuong is a friend, Karin Khuong is a sister, she is a daughter, a basketball player, a Terry Fox Raven… she is a 16-year-old girl battling cancer. Karin has suffered many struggles for the last two years since her surprising diagnosis. She has persevered through all kinds of challenges in her treatment and devastating relapse. Karin has so many qualities that I admire but the ones I find most inspiring are her determination, her refusal to give up, and the way she continues to live her life the best she can.” This is a paragraph from an essay that I wrote in 2020, the night before Karin passed away. Even after her death, the #2kstrong hashtag continues to inspire us all to live our lives to the fullest, and to persevere through all life’s obstacles and challenges just as Karin did. Karin’s presence online in life wasn’t super vocal or active, but it was more her quiet strength that inspired others to create an online memory and presence after her death that continues to remind us of these characteristics. This symbol that I drew on an app online, represents Karin in so many ways, through her jersey number, that shows her undoubtedly strong and brave qualities of never giving up, when she continued to play basketball after she was diagnosed… her angel wings and halo that show how her young life was taken away from us too soon. Everyone misses her, but through her hashtag her memory lives on and continues to inspire us all.
