This portfolio showcases the culmination of my work in Drafting 12. Due to my previous experience and the foundational skills I developed in Grades 9 and 10, I had already completed the majority of the required assignments prior to this school year. As a result, I only needed to complete one additional task to fulfill the course requirements for Grade 12. The final assignment allowed me to refresh my skills, reinforce important drafting concepts, and demonstrate my continued growth in design and technical drawing.
Once the task was completed, I shifted my focus toward two major undertakings: my capstone project and my contributions to organizing our school’s annual STEAM Fair. For my capstone, I applied both my creative and technical abilities to a project that reflected the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my drafting journey. It also served as an opportunity to practice real-world design processes, from planning and research to execution and presentation.
In preparation for the STEAM Fair, I played a key role in the logistics and planning phase. One of my main responsibilities was creating a form to collect data from participants regarding their equipment needs—specifically, how many tables, computers, TVs, and power cords each group required. Gathering this information was essential for efficient space planning and resource allocation. I also took the initiative to follow up with individuals who had not completed the form, ensuring that everyone’s needs were accounted for and that the planning process stayed on track.
Originally, I was assigned to design the layout for the fair, which involved drafting a floor plan to determine how best to arrange tables and stations within the available space. Although that task was later reassigned to another student. On the day of the event, I also assisted with setup, helping to ensure that all equipment was properly distributed and that the library was organized according to plan.
Overall, this year in Drafting 12 allowed me to build on my prior experience, take on meaningful leadership roles, and apply my drafting skills in collaborative, real-world scenarios. It was a rewarding experience that helped strengthen my technical abilities as well as my communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
The final assignment I completed for Drafting 12 was designing a protractor and a ruler. While the task itself wasn’t overly complicated, the process ended up being much more challenging than expected due to persistent technical issues. In theory, this design should have taken about an hour to complete. However, I had to recreate the same design five separate times because my Autodesk account kept malfunctioning. Each time I thought the issue had been resolved, especially after making progress or updating settings, the account would crash the moment I attempted to export or save my work. This ongoing problem took two full days to troubleshoot and added a lot of frustration to an otherwise straightforward assignment.
Despite the setbacks, I eventually managed to complete the design successfully. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a photo of the printed version, but the photo included below shows the final version of my work. This experience, while frustrating, taught me the importance of patience, persistence, and problem-solving when working with design software and technology in general.
