Science Honors 9

The following is the criteria for the science 9 honors program.

Science Classroom Assignment:

This was a project I made in the drafting steam 9 class. The assignment was to make a smart device that saves energy and mine was as follows:

A smart fan that automatically turns on and off similar to an air conditioner. I could turn on and off the fan at any temperature I set it to. I partnered with Rameshinder on this project and we put it together using a 3d printer and an Arduino. It was coded and built to save energy by turning off when the room cools off than turning back on in the heat. You can see the led display displaying the temperature turning on once its above 21 degrees. Download the video below.

Other activities I Participated in:

Electrical Etching on a piece of Metal

This was a fun project, We painted a piece of metal with nail polish and etched out our design from the nail polish, leaving a negative space drawing of what our final product would be. We then electrically burned the metal in the negative space using a salt mixture to draw our design. After removing the polish we are left with a cool result. I am not a very good artist so the drawings weren’t the best but it still turned out. I feel like if we were to do this again it would help if we used something else other than nail polish because with me and my friends the polish would keep on melting sort of smudging the design.

Chemistry Demonstration:

This was the first honors activity I participated in and was a cool one. Ms. Lawson had a chemistry demonstration including Elephant Toothpaste and many explosions. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures or videos of this demonstration but it was still a cool memory.

Final Thought + Reflection:

Describe each activity you participated in (include pictures) – What did you do?

I went over everything I did above.

What did you learn? What are you proud of achieving?

Throughout the year, I spent a lot of my time learning Arduinos, I have based a couple drafting projects off Arduinos and unfortunately we didn’t use them in science. I am proud of how much I learned and that I am now strong with Arduinos. In science specifically, I found the Electricity unit the most interesting. To further my understanding a little I participated in chemical etching for chemistry. I wish that there may have been a few more honors projects this year, I found all the activities we did were just participating and id not require much work such as the chemistry demonstration which we just watched and the chemical etching which was only a little bit of work.

What questions do you have about science that you would be interested in exploring in the future?

I really want to further my understanding in electricity as it is somewhere in the field of work I would like to get into. This year during science and science honors we didn’t do physics at all which is definitely something that interests me the most.
